A boat carrying 80 immigrants sinks in Greek territorial waters

Shafaq News / Press sources reported on Wednesday that a boat carrying illegal immigrants, some of them from the Kurdistan Region, sank in Greek territorial waters.

The sources told Shafaq News agency that a boat sank on Monday, with 80 migrants on board, some of them are Kurdish, indicating that a large number of those who drowned were rescued while others are still missing in Greek territorial waters.

The sources said that the boat sailed from Turkey to Italy, but for unknown reasons it sank in Greek, pointing out that the Greek police tried to prevent that "disaster" to no avail.

For his part, Head of the Summit Foundation for Refugees and Displaced Affairs Ari Jalal told Shafaq News agency that the representative of the Foundation in Europe reported that a boat carrying more than 60 immigrants had sunk between Turkey and Greece near Crete Island.

He explained that the Greek coast police headed immediately to the scene and managed to rescue 57 migrants, adding that initial information indicates that four bodies of two women and two children were found.

Jalal indicated that the immigrants are Kurds, Afghans, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and Somalis.
